Removable Dentures

In cases where multiple adjacent teeth are missing and patients do not want their natural teeth prepared or are not yet suitable for dental implants, removable dentures are an ideal solution. Removable dentures are prosthetic appliances that can be easily removed and reinserted by the patient. They consist of artificial teeth replacing the missing teeth along with a pink denture base designed to resemble natural gums.

There are 2 types of removable dentures based on materials:

1. Metal Framework Dentures:

These dentures feature a strong metal framework covered with pink acrylic resin and artificial teeth on top. The denture is supported by the remaining natural teeth, allowing chewing forces to be distributed more physiologically and reducing bone loss in missing tooth areas. The chewing sensation is also more natural compared to full acrylic dentures. This type of denture is generally more durable (lasting approximately 7–10 years), but it may not be suitable if too few natural teeth remain.

2. Acrylic Dentures:

These dentures are made entirely from acrylic resin and are retained using clasps attached to the remaining teeth. They are indicated for patients with extensive tooth loss where the remaining teeth cannot adequately support a metal framework denture. Chewing forces are transmitted directly to the underlying bone, which may lead to more significant bone resorption over time.

Removable Denture Procedure:

Typically, the process requires 4 appointments to complete:

  • First Appointment: Examination, consultation, preparation of support areas (for metal framework dentures), impressions, and recording the bite relationship.
  • Second Appointment: Wax try-in for denture adjustment. At this stage, if you are not fully satisfied, do not hesitate to inform the dentist. hiDental dentists will make adjustments to achieve optimal aesthetics and function.
  • Third Appointment: Delivery of the denture and final adjustments.
  • Fourth Appointment: Follow-up visit and pain relief adjustments if any discomfort occurs.

Treatment Time and Complexity Depend on the Number of Missing Teeth:

  • Patients with many remaining teeth and favorable missing tooth positions: In these cases, the procedure is generally simpler, and denture retention is often better because the bite can be restored more effectively and there are more natural teeth available for support.
  • Patients with very few or no remaining teeth: Full dentures are required when all teeth are missing. In such cases, recreating a natural bite similar to the original dentition becomes a significant challenge for the dentist. This stage is the most time-consuming and demanding, but if not performed properly, it can lead to discomfort, pain, and even difficulty using the dentures.
