There are many causes of tooth discoloration: consuming heavily pigmented foods and drinks (tea, coffee, turmeric, etc.), non-vital teeth, naturally dark-colored teeth, tetracycline staining, and more. Whatever the cause may be, discolored teeth can make your smile appear less vibrant. Therefore, teeth whitening has become an increasingly popular cosmetic treatment for people of all genders and ages.
At hiDental, we offer 3 teeth whitening treatment options for you to choose from:
1. At-home whitening under dentist supervision:
At your first appointment, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth and create a custom-fitted whitening tray. At home, you will place the whitening gel (selected by the dentist) into the tray and wear it over your teeth. The at-home whitening process ends once you achieve your desired shade, but treatment should not exceed 2 weeks.
- Advantages: affordable cost, less time spent at the clinic.
- Disadvantages: patients must perform the treatment themselves, so results depend greatly on your consistency. During the whitening process, you must avoid all colored foods and drinks because the enamel is more susceptible to staining at this stage. Another disadvantage is that the whitening process is relatively slower.
2. In-office whitening:
A whitening agent will be applied to your teeth, and a plasma light will be used to accelerate the whitening effect. The entire in-office whitening procedure takes only about 45 minutes, and you do not need to wear whitening trays at home afterward.
- Advantages: visible results in a short amount of time. Since the dentist performs the procedure, patients often feel more reassured.
- Disadvantages: higher cost.
3. Combined whitening:
If in-office whitening alone does not achieve your desired shade and you want even whiter teeth, the dentist will create whitening trays and instruct you on additional at-home whitening treatment.
- Advantages: quick procedure with more guaranteed whitening results.
- Disadvantages: higher cost.

Whitening Procedure:
At hiDental, the Plasma teeth whitening procedure includes the following steps:
Step 1:
Examination and consultation: In cases where teeth whitening cannot improve tooth color (such as tetracycline-stained teeth or discoloration caused by non-vital teeth), patients will be advised to consider other treatments such as porcelain veneers to enhance the appearance of their teeth.
Step 2:
Professional cleaning by removing tartar buildup. Cavities will be filled to prevent the whitening agent from reaching the dentin layer and causing sensitivity. For front teeth, temporary fillings at this stage are only for protection and should be replaced after whitening to better match the new tooth shade.
Step 3:
Perform Plasma teeth whitening (in-office whitening) and/or take dental impressions to fabricate whitening trays (for at-home whitening treatment).
Step 4:
Post-treatment care instructions and scheduling follow-up appointments.
Notes:
- Whitening agents only work on natural teeth and are ineffective on porcelain restorations.
Results vary depending on age, the severity of discoloration, and the type of staining. For severe discoloration, a combination of in-office whitening and at-home tray whitening may be recommended for optimal results. - Due to differences in enamel structure, tooth sensitivity levels vary from patient to patient.
- Patients should stop the treatment if severe sensitivity occurs. However, mild sensitivity during whitening is completely normal and should not be a concern.
- During the whitening process and for 2 weeks afterward, you should avoid consuming colored foods and drinks, especially dark-colored ones, because the enamel is more sensitive and prone to re-staining during this period. To reduce staining risk, you may use a straw when drinking colored beverages.
- After treatment, avoid beverages that are too hot or too cold, as they may increase tooth sensitivity.
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene during and after treatment to minimize the chance of teeth becoming stained again.
